Traveling across country w/a 7 month old?

Next month my husband and I will be traveling across the country with our 7 month old. We'll be on vacation for a couple weeks so we'll need a lot of stuff. In addition to a rather large suitcase/duffle bag for each of us, we'll need to bring his car seat(which we won't bring on the plane), his play pen, and a stroller (which I know we can check at the gate). My question is, will we be allowed to check all of those things?
My husband and I are the ony ones with tickets, my son will just ride on our laps.
Thanks for all of the help, however I am staying with family and not renting a car. Surprisingly enough, no one they know has a car seat or play pen we could borrow. =(
I forgot an important detail...we're flying Southwest.

Most airlines will let you bring your car seat and stroller on the plane with you. If there is an open seat near your they will let you use your carseat and keep baby in it rather than keep him on your lap the whole time.

Depending on the airline you should be able to bring one carry on bag each, plus one diaper bag (and the car seat & stroller). You should also be able to each check one or two bags for each ticket holder (depending on airline) and the playpen can count as one bag. If your airline only allows one bag each then they can charge you a fee to check your playpen. Some charge up to $70, but I have also been on flights before where they just let you go without charging.

We usually travel Jetblue, so I included a link to their webpage that talks about traveling with infants. Most other airlines have something similar on their webpage.
